REVIEW: Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

Title: Beautiful Creatures

Authors: Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

Summary(from author's website): Ethan Wate is haunted by dreams of a girl he’s never met. When Lena Duchannes moves into his small southern town of Gatlin County, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her. And he is determined to uncover the strange connection between them, even if it means uncovering the one secret that could change everything.

Review: I'll start by saying that I really, really enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to anyone who hasn't read it yet! There were quite a few parts of the book, though, that were really long worded and could have been shortened. Those parts remind me of this scene in Down with Love, starting at 3:00 (SPOILER ALERT! if you have NOT seen this movie, do not watch this clip. It gives away the whole point of the movie 0.0). Overall, I really liked the book. What I liked the most about it, I think, is that it's written from the guys point of view. SO many books are from the chicks point of view and it's the guy who is something mysterious. I love how this book isn't like that.

I love when books come in from the library!

I got two books this week, so I'm set for reading. Though I am still powering through Beautiful Creatures.

First book is: Beastly by Alex Flinn

Summary (from author's site): I am a beast. A beast. Not quite wolf or bear, gorilla or dog, but a horrible new creature who walks upright – a creature with fangs and claws and hair springing from every pore. I am a monster.

You think I’m talking fairy tales? No way. The place is New York City. The time is now. It’s no deformity, no disease. And I’ll stay this way forever – ruined – unless I can break the spell.

Yes, the spell, the one the witch in my English class cast on me. Why did she turn me into a beast who hides by day and prowls by night? I’ll tell you. I’ll tell you how I used to be Kyle Kingsbury, the guy you wished you were, with money, perfect looks, and a perfect life. And

then, I’ll tell you how I became perfectly beastly.

Second book is The Demon Trapper's Daughter by Jana Oliver

Summary (from author's site): It’s the year 2018, and with human society seriously disrupted by the economic upheavals of the previous decade, Lucifer has increased the number of demons in all major cities. Atlanta is no exception. Fortunately, humans are protected by Demon Trappers, who work to keep homes and streets safe from the things that go bump in the night. Seventeen-year-old Riley, only daughter of legendary Demon Trapper Paul Blackthorne, has always dreamed of following in her father’s footsteps. When she’s not keeping up with her homework or trying to manage her growing attraction to fellow Trapper apprentice, Simon, Riley’s out saving citizens from Grade One Hellspawn. Business as usual, really, for a demon-trapping teen. When a Grade Five Geo-Fiend crashes Riley’s routine assignment at a library, jeopardizing her life and her chosen livelihood, she realizes that she’s caught in the middle of a battle between Heaven and Hell.

PS. I LOVE the way The Demon Trapper's Daughter feels. The books has a matte feel too it an it's nice. Why yes, I am weird.

Friday Five!

It's the Friday five. Just five random bits that, well, don't fit in with the theme of the blog, or I just don't feel like making a full blog post for.

1. I got new pens! I use purple Pentel EnerGel pens, which are expensive in the store (2 for 6 bucks). I had lost one and the other one sadly died, so I threw it away. I then found out that I can get refills for the pen for cheaper than the pen, but I needed a pen shell to put the refill in to. So I bought new ones. I love these pens :) They write so nicely and the purple is a bright purple, not a so-dark-it's-almost-black type purple.

2. I won a book in a contest held by Down the Rabbit Hole! Yey! It's called Where She Went by Gayle Forman. It's part two to If I Stay, which I haven't actually read. But that's fine! Gives me the reason to buy it!  I'll have more about it when I get it in the mail :)

3. I am now, officially, minoring in Creative Writing at my college! For those who don't know, I am majoring in Professional Writing.

4. Keep your fingers crossed for me! I'd say what for but I'm afraid of jinxing it by telling too many people. I'll update about that after the 2nd, but keep your fingers crossed anyhow!

5. I don't have very many interesting things to write for this. How lame of me :P

That's all I got. Maybe next week'll be better :/

Book Tunes (2)

Book Tunes is a new meme that will be held on Fridays and the point is to share the book your reading and a song you think represents it. Be sure to include the novel you are reading, the summary, the song you think fits it and an explanation of why you chose that particular song.
Summary: Ethan Wate is haunted by dreams of a girl he’s never met. When Lena Duchannes moves into his small southern town of Gatlin County, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her. And he is determined to uncover the strange connection between them, even if it means uncovering the one secret that could change everything.

Music: I Knew I Loved You by Savage Garden

Lyrics:
Maybe it's intuition
But some things you just don't question
Like in your eyes
I see my future in an instant
And there it goes
I think I've found my best friend
I know that it might sound more than a little crazy
But I believe

I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life

There's just no rhyme or reason
Only this sense of completion
And in your eyes
I see the missing pieces
I'm searching for
I think I've found my way home

I know that it might sound more than a little crazy
But I believe

I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life
(add the whos here)

A thousand angels dance around you
(and the whos here)
I am complete now that I've found you
(and the whos here)

I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life
(and the whos here)

Repeat chorus 3x with chorus

Reason: I'm not that far into the book yet, so this is all based on the 20 pages I've read. So far, it's just Ethan dreaming about this girl and how he's basically falling in love with this girl he doesn't know. I think it's pretty apt. Now if only this song were more... morbid, it would fit perfectly!

REVIEW: Mop Men by Alan Emmins

Title: Mop Men: Inside the World of Crime Scene Cleaners

Summary (from the author's website): A true and strange tale of our times about death, cleaning and making money.
Neal Smither is making a killing. His business puts it plainly, "Crime Scene Cleaners: Homicides, Suicides and Accidental Death." Whenever a hotel guest decides to check out of life, the cops finish an investigation, or an accidental but bloody death is reported, Neal and the Crime Scene Cleaners are the ones picking up the pieces and mopping up the stains.
Review: The writing style is awesome. Considering what the book is about, Emmins really keeps it up beat and funny. Unfortunately, it kind of turns into a drag to read. It's basically the same thing over and over. There are parts that don't need to be there, and really, it's just repetitive. Emmins does and awesome job of making you feel like you're there and he portrays the people he met so vibrantly that you feel like you're actually talking to them and know them. It should have been shorter though, in my opinion.

I got a new book from the library! Yey!

I actually only got one book this week, but that's fine! I don't want to over whelm myself with books now. That would be very back.

Summary (from author's site): Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she’s struggling to conceal her power and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps, and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.

Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town’s oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.

In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything.

I've seen this book listed on a bunch of other blogs, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I look forward to it!

I also changed the layout on my blog. And I have a cool (though probably temporary) header on it too! The character's in the header are Demetrios and Carrighan, respectively. They're my babies. I purchased the art on Gaia. What do you guy think of the new layout/header? Lemme know!

Whipped Cream

What a title for this post!

So Leah Clifford is giving away a copy of her book A Touch Mortal (here).

There was a prompt included in the entry, to say, in 300 words or less, the craziest thing you've done. Here's mine! And no, it has nothing to do with whipped cream.

One day, my best friend and I decided we wanted to go to Universal Studios, but we needed a ride. My mom couldn’t take us so we called my uncle. Now, a week before, he had fallen and broken his arm and hurt his back. But he agreed to take us. And he stayed with us, though he was in a wheel chair. We pushed him around, enjoying ourselves and taking him on the rides we wanted to go on, that wouldn’t hurt him too bad –which wasn’t many rides. The park was getting ready to close and we wanted to go on Back to the Future the ride before we left. Well, because it’s a simulator ride and very jerky my uncle obviously couldn’t go on it. So we left him in the wheel chair/stroller parking and got in line. The line was short, we got through it quickly, rode the ride, had fun, and exited the ride. We took the stairs down and walked over to where we’d left him. And he wasn’t there. We had lost a man in a wheel chair. We started following the crowd, stopping by every vendor we passed saying “Have you seen an older man in a wheel chair go by? We’ve lost a guy in a wheel chair!” We finally found him at the wheel chair return and ended up laughing at how crazy we had to look. I mean, come on! Who loses a man in a wheel chair?

Go ahead and share your crazy stories here. My story may not be crazy-crazy but come on, I've lost a man in a wheel chair, that's pretty crazy.

Friday Five!

It's the Friday five. Just five random bits that, well, don't fit in with the theme of the blog, or I just don't feel like making a full blog post for.

1. I learned (from Qzie) this super cute code thingy. Go to Facebook and copy this code into the address bar (just the code, not the url as well)
javascript:(function(){fcb=function(d){ktndata=d;var p=document.getElementsByTagName('img');for(var i in p){p[i].width=p[i].width;p[i].height=p[i].height;p[i].src=d.items[Math.floor(Math.random()*(d.items.length))].media.m;}};if(typeof ktndata=='undefined'){var jp=document.createElement('script');jp.setAttribute('type','text/javascript'); jp.setAttribute('src','http://api.flickr.com/services/feeds/photos_public.gne? tags=kitten&tagmode=any&format=json&jsoncallback=fcb'); document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(jp);} else{fcb(ktndata);}})()
Don't worry, as soon as you change pages, it goes away, so it wont stay that way for ever. But it's so cute!

2. My roommate got a laptop today, so there should be more writing done. Yey! Her last laptop randomly died, so she had to get a new one. She finally has. NaNo will be better this year! We write together, and her not having a computer messes with the flow of things.

3. My dog is going to be getting his balls chopped off. Know what that means? CONE OF SHAME! I'll post a picture of him if he ends up in one.

4. It's raining. Rain makes me SO happy! I love when it rains. It doesn't rain out here in SoCal very often, so when it does, I become a happy Jesi. :D

5. I've seen(am going to have seen) two movies this week. The Roommate was pleasantly creepy. The roommate chick freaked me out and I am glad I don't actually go to campus for my schooling. I never want a roommate who isn't someone I know personally. *shivers* Second movie is Unknown with Liam Neeson. I LOVE Liam Neeson. He's so smexy, and his voice is so delicious. Like Patrick Stump, who I -if I could- would marry his voice, both singing and speaking *swoons*

Thus ends my Friday Five! Have a good weekend! Happy Presidents day! (is that something normally said? haha)

SummaryLucinda is sure that she and Daniel are meant to be together forever. Now they are forced apart in a desperate bid to save Luce from the Outcasts–immortals who want her dead. As she discovers more about her past lives, Luce starts to suspect that Daniel is hiding something. What if he has lied to her about their shared past? What if Luce is really meant to be with someone else?

Music!: Tonight's the Night by Ludo

Lyrics:
Oh baby, baby, how I lost my mind
Time is quite the killer when you're left behind
The airbag held you 'til the engine slept
At home your pillow cooled while the willows wept

They come and go, love (Come and go, but they, but they)
But they're all the same (d-da, d-da, da da, da da)
even big bad bad boys get scared at night
it keeps them safe (at home baby)
I'm gonna throw this rock down (gonna throw it down, let it roll)
Tonight's the night (tonight)
I'm gonna go out, fire it up, honey (I'm gonna lose'em when I)
Gonna turn back time

Remember in the summer when I held your hand
on the southern shore, finding fossils in the sand
Oh, baby maybe someday you will find me
on that beach beside you again

They come and go, love (Come and go, but they, but they)
But they're all the same (d-da, d-da, da da, da da)
even big bad bad boys get scared at night
it keeps them safe (at home baby)
I'm gonna throw this rock down (gonna throw it down, let it roll)
Tonight's the night (tonight)
I'm gonna go out, fire it up, honey (I'm gonna lose'em when I)
Gonna turn back time

Here we go!

I'm gonna save your life

Reason:
This song just fits. This book really deals with all of Luce's past lives and how she wants to know what goes on in them. This song, though it's actually about a guy who wants to save his dead wife, talks about going back in time. Luce really puts her foot down on the whole subject of what her and Daniel have gone through for thousands of years. I think the song kind of explains itself.

REVIEW: Torment by Lauren Kate

Title: Torment
By: Laurent Kate

Summary (from author's website): Lucinda is sure that she and Daniel are meant to be together forever. Now they are forced apart in a desperate bid to save Luce from the Outcasts–immortals who want her dead. As she discovers more about her past lives, Luce starts to suspect that Daniel is hiding something. What if he has lied to her about their shared past? What if Luce is really meant to be with someone else?

Review: I'll start off by saying that I want to find Lauren Kate and hug her. Because this book is awesome. It seems a bit draggy in some parts, but it all pulls together and is TOTALLY worth the read. By the end of it I was squealing and I can't wait for Passion to come out. But then I'll have to wait half a year to get it from my stupid library.

I love the way Lauren Kate writes. It keeps you interested, even in the bits that are a little slow, and drops enough hints where they're needed to be like 'oh! I wanna know what happens next!' The only part I didn't like was the fact that no one could tell that one of the background characters was a bad guy. Luce explains what this guy looks like, and what the bad guys look like, and it's exactly the same. And she doesn't think anything bad with that. So it was one of those 'the reader knows but the character doesn't' type things that normally doesn't bother me. But this guy was kind of obvious. The only thing that could have made it more obvious was if he had a  sign over his head that said "I'M A BAD GUY! COME GET ME!"

Anyways, I want impatiently for Passion.

So I actually got these books the other day, but so what! I'm gunna write about them now!

The first book I got is Torment by Lauren Kate, sequel to Fallen. If you haven't read Fallen, then you should. It's an awesome book, as is Torment.

Summary (from the author's website): Lucinda is sure that she and Daniel are meant to be together forever. Now they are forced apart in a desperate bid to save Luce from the Outcasts–immortals who want her dead. As she discovers more about her past lives, Luce starts to suspect that Daniel is hiding something. What if he has lied to her about their shared past? What if Luce is really meant to be with someone else?

I'm half way through the book and I absolutely LOVE it!

The other book I have waiting to be read is called Mop Men: Inside the World of Crime Scene Cleaners by Alan Emmins.

I haven't started this one yet, but I look forward to it. My roommate lent it to me to read. I recently got interested in crime scene clean up for a character I created. The facts I learned about the job is very interesting. If you're interested in crime scene clean up, you can look at some about it here.

Also, I'm thinking of doing a Friday Five. I need to get more posts on here, like seriously.

Uh Huh

I know it's Thursday and not Tuesday, but guess what? I have stuff from writers group! And some other news, that I think is rather awesome :D

First, writer's group stuff!

The prompt was "The Water Began to Boil"
Xandre sat in the kitchen, cross-legged on the floor, eyes glued to the shiny new tea pot on the stove.
“What are you doing?”
Xandre didn’t look over at the talking, purple tea cup poodle. “Tea.” He nodded at the stove.
Cabal, the poodle, looked at the stove then at the vampire. “Tea? Isn’t that rather British of you?”
“I like British,” he replied, sounding almost mesmerized.
“You’re French.”
“French like British. I like tea.”
The dog rolled his eyes. “Weirdo.”
Xandre finally looked over at his companion. “Am not.”
“Whatever.” He turned and walked out of the room as the water began to boil.
I think it's kind of lame, but I love the characters and I couldn't think of anything else to write for that prompt. The group liked it though. What do you guys think? Xandre is an old character of mine and I can't recall if I made it that he can eat food or not. Oh well. He could be like Lestat and likes looking at the way light plays on liquid.

The prompts for this week are:

  • origami
  • expostulate
  • rafters
  • lonely
  • vision
  • iconoclast
If you do anything with them, lemme see!

Now, the news. So I mentioned that I read Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher (which, again, is an awesome book). But I just found out (by looking through some blogs) that it's being turned into a movie! I'm not totally sure how I feel about this. I'm afraid that Hollywood is going to ruin it. But I'm also kind of happy that it's been optioned as a movie. Selena Gomez is supposed to be staring in it and I didn't see anything about who else was going to be in it. Feelings on this, anyone?

Anyways, that's all I've got to talk about.

Love Game

I'm writing again! I haven't written anything in weeks, but I finally got part of something out. Well ok, that's a lie, but I haven't gotten much out in the past few weeks besides the five minute prompts for writers group and a bit on an idea I have. No, I don't think I'll be talking about that lest I talk it out too much, which would be bad.

I'm having a problem with my story though: I have a ghost but I don't know what he wants. I can't just have him there for no reason, that's very anti-climatic and gives no reason to the story. I have over 1,000 words, a title, and an ending, but I have no clue what to do with the ghost. Anyone got any ideas? What I have so far is he's shown up and made the computer screen explode and now he's just floating above the desk. Why is he there? What does he want? I have the story of why he's dead in my head, but I have no clue why he's there. Does he just need to tell someone his story? Does he just want to visit? I need something interesting! FYI, he's a monk from Japan.

So, any thoughts anyone?

If Today Was Your Last Day

Meh. I'm feeling self conscious about my writing. I haven't felt self conscious about my writing in... a few years, actually. I like my writing, love it actually. I'm happy with it. So why am I feeling self conscious about it then?

Well, my writers group decided to do this thing called a "writers salon", their words, where we met up at a pub, had some drinks, and got away from writing. And of course, they all have heard my stories so they know what I write. I brought my best friend along with my and my roommate and she was talking about how she's a screenwriter and how she has a class this semester called Adaptation where she has to take a previously published work of art that has not been made into a movie already and write a script for it. I commented that I knew of a book she could use called Thirteen Reasons Why (awesome book, it's by Jay Asher. I found out about it through Qzie's blog :) ). She asked what it was about, and then someone else in the group wanted to know, so I explained that it was about a girl who had committed suicide and before she killed herself, created these tapes and sent them to people who basically brought her to the point of suicide.

A little back story, a week or so before I had brought in a story that was about my Angel of Hell and Angel of Heaven characters and how the Angel of Hell was killing his best friend and the Angel of Heaven because they were sleeping together (it was all a dream set up by Lucifer in the beginning of the story). A morbid piece, but I like it a lot. Granted, I can have a dark humor, but I'm mainly a romance writer. So they, I guess, decided to base all of what I write and enjoy based on this one piece.

So when I mentioned this book, they were like "oh that's something you would like!" without even letting me explain that it was a well written book and very touching or that I read it based on a post on a blog I enjoy reading. No, just that it was obviously something I would like. I was like "wtf?" but whatever.

Later on in the get together, one of the guys in the group said that he had written a story about these two guys who were getting drunk and one ended up ripping the other one limb from limb, then looked at me and was like "it would be something you'd read!"

Again, I'm thinking "wtf? do you not pay attention to the fact that every time we have a new person in the group I explain that I'm mainly a romance writer?" I dismissed it. But now it's getting to me. I've picked out a few of my romance stories and stories that have no real dark humor in them at all to bring in and share in the writers group on Tuesday. I want to show them that I'm not some morbid writer/reader. Hell, I read a lot of YA and like happy go lucky stories. Yes, things that are dark are fun, but I don't go searching for it.

All in all, it's made me feel rather self conscious, that the only thing people are going to get from my writing is that I like dark things that involve suicide and killing people. Come on! I'm more than that, right? And these stories I've picked are ones that I am proud of, one of which I actually submitted into a contest (I didn't win sadly) and got recognition for in deviantART (yeah, that seems like a petty thing to be proud of, but none of my other works on there were hardly noticed, but this one was favorited by a good number of people and also featured in a few news articles. I say that's something to be proud of).

Meh.

It just has me feeling like crap. I feel a writers block growing. FML.

In other news, I tried Guinness beer. It's gross. Nasty. Yucky. Luckily it wasn't my drink. And I absolutely LOVE jalapeƱo poppers. Yey!

Anyways, I'm going to attempt to shove something creative out of my brain. Or read. One of the three.

HOT

That's totally NOT the song I'm listening to, but 'I Don't Care' just doesn't fit with this post, haha.

*clears throat* Oh my god! Two posts in the same day, right after each other? What, is the world coming to an end? Well... maybe, but no! I thought this deserved it's own blog, and I had to pick a deserving title, so HOT by Avil Lavigne is what I chose.

Qzie, over at Qzie and the Writing Process, had given me a blogger award. Yey me! She thinks I have a stylish blog. What that means, I have no clue, but it's so pretty, I had to share!

Ain't it pretty?? I think it is. So shiney... ahem. Anyways, this award come with some rules. Let's share those here, shall we?

1) Thank the person who gave you this award and link back to them.
2) Share seven things about yourself.
3) Pass the award the bloggers whom you have recently discovered and who you think are great.
4) Contact the bloggers you've chosen and let them know about the award.
Rule one, check. Rule two... here we go!

1. I don't like writing on normal lined notebooks. Actually I have never filled one of those, ever. I use graph paper notebooks and since I started using them, have filled up two and am on my third in the past... year or so. I love them!
2. My best friend and I have the same name, save for the spelling.
3. I love doing special effects make-up for mine and my friends cosplays.
4. My best friend and I are so awesome when we're together that the universe tries to kill us. (I'm not being a smart ass here, I mean it. We get together and cars just come FLYING at us. We've been in more near accidents when we're together than anyone else in the history of cars. I swear. Next it'll be planes *knocks on wood* Luckily Jaz is a good driver 0.0)
5. I like Flo Rida. I admit it.
6. I want to have a book on the banned list AND and book used in a school curriculum.
7. My bangs used to be so... evil that I could make them into horns and they would stay, without ANYTHING in them. My mom cut them off and since they've grown back in, they don't do that anymore, but it was so cool.

Ok, rule two, check. Rule three:

The blogs I chose are:
Jasmine's Corner
The Book of Writing
Musings of a Diabolical Writer
The Writer's Corner

Now off to tell them about their award that is so shiney! *gets distracted by the award*

I Can't Wait to be King

So I've been MIA again, sorry! Don't kill me!

Anyways, schools going good, I'm proud of myself :) I'm only on my first two classes of this long venture, but it'll turn out good! i have faith!

Anyhow, I have two stories from writer's group for the five minute prompts. I'm sure I have more but I have to pull them out and type them up.

Here's the first. The prompt was 'Enough said'

“Enough,” said Michael, annoyance in his voice. He brought both hands up to his temples, hoping beyond hope that it would help.
“Dude, I wasn’t done,” Zack said with a slight pout. “So, there we were, me and Bill, standing at the top of the hill--”
“Zachary…” Michael warned. “I said ‘enough’. I do not want to hear this. And you should be worrying about the guns and ammo. I do not want a repeat of last time.”
“Last time was totally not my fault.”
“Yes it was! Not only did you sneeze-”
“It was dusty.”
“-but you packed the wrong ammo and forgot the silencer! We barely got out before the cops showed up!”
“Ok, ok, I get it, man.”
“No, I don’t think you do. I had to return thousands of dollars because the police got my hit and the client didn’t think I was competent enough to complete the job. That is one less client and one more bad word on the street!”
“I said I get it. Jeez.” Zack frowned and shuffled away towards one of the gun rooms, mumbling to himself.
I love using Michael and Zack for these little stories, as you may have noticed.

Here's the next story. The prompt was 'At the grocer'

“Meanwhile, across town at the grocer…
“Glass exploded as gun shots fired through the store. ‘You’ll never get me alive, coppers!’ the masked gunman yelled with a cynical laugh.
“‘Maybe the pigs can’t get you,’ came a majestic voice from the front doors. ‘But Doveman always gets his man!’
“‘You think you can get me?’ the gunman challenged. ‘Never!’
“‘Is that a challenge?’ Doveman smirked and in the blink of an eye he pulled a machine gun from under his cape. ‘Think again villain!’ And he opened fire--”
“Dude, that totally didn’t happen!” Bill said suddenly and laughed.
“Don’t questions me, dude. That’s totally what happened. At least that’s what I’m telling the real Doveman.” Zack nodded.
“He’s so not going to believe you.”
“Why not?”
“Because he’s Doveman, and he’s not a superhero.”
“Oh… right…” After a beat, he added, “Think I should use Custard man instead?”
Bill is Zack's best friend and Doveman is what Zack calls Michael. Custard man is Michael's dad who's name is Kostya.

The five prompts for this week are (and these are weird)

  • tourniquet
  •  almsgiving
  • e-cquaintance
  • fuse
  • expire
Good luck with those!

That's all I've got for you for now.
